What Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan does

Mission

We exist to provide households with access to sufficient, nutritious food and related resources. We accomplish this through collaboration, efficient operations, education, and innovative solutions to achieve a hunger-free community in southeastern michigan.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2024 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.

Gleaners concluded its sponsorship of the summer food service program (sfsp) in fy2025 and the child and adult care food program (cacfp) after the 2024 - 2025 school year. In fy2025, gleaners sponsored 16 cacfp sites and served 58,864 suppers to children in need during the 2024 - 2025 school year.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).

  1. Gleaners core activity involves securing, storing, and distributing nutritious food to those in need via a network of community partners, schools, and programs located throughout wayne, oakland, macomb, livingston and monroe counties. In fy2025, gleaners food distributions totaled 47.5 million pounds, equating to over 39 million meals. To supplement our network of partner agency food distributions in fy2025, we maintained a network of 22 equivalent gleaners run bi-weekly mobile food distributions focused on underserved communities. These community mobiles served 188,378 meal packages through 498 distributions in fy2025, including fresh produce and milk, along with shelf stable and frozen food staples. Distributions through these community mobiles totaled 6.9 million pounds of the 47.5 million pounds of total food distributions.in fy2025, gleaners served students and families through monthly school mobile food distributions at 39 sites with 1.5 million pounds of food.gleaners senior mobile pantries bring nutritious food to low-income senior living communities. 3. Cooking matters (cm) and food smarts (fs) are both national nutrition education programs that teach low-income families (both adults and children) how to prepare healthy meals economically and make healthier food choices. Fs is unique in that it brings a trauma-informed and more reflection approach to the educational content. Both are led by employee and volunteer chefs and nutritionists. In fy2025, nearly 1,200 people graduated from the program. Cm and fs are both still offered virtually and in-person, however the majority of classes take place in-person.

  4. Our volunteer program creates experiences for people to engage in hunger-relief work. From packing food for community mobile, school mobile, or senior food distributions to working the front lines directly serving consumers at our shared harvest pantry in howell, fresh! By gleaners pantry in warren, or fresh market pantry mobile distributions in southwest detroit, volunteers play a critical role in packing and distributing food to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Over 19,000 volunteer shifts were completed in fy2025 comprising over 51,000 service hours, representing the equivalent of 24 full-time workers.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 95 funders to 167 funders, grant income rose $3.4M → $9.5M.

40 of 417 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 16% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GLEANERS COMMUNITY FOOD BANK OF SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 417 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GLEANERS COMMUNITY FOOD BANK OF SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 24% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

64% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GLEANERS COMMUNITY FOOD BANK OF SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $13M arriving through sponsors registered in 22 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
