01What it does

What Girls on the Run of the Bay Area Inc does

Mission

Girls on the Run of the Bay Area inspires youth to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, hands-on curriculum which creatively integrates outdoor exercises and running. We aim to ensure that every participant, no matter their activity level, ethnicity, race or economic status, benefits from our program.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Girls served: Girls on the Run of the Bay Area served 1,752 youth, 126 teams in five Bay Area counties Programs: In FY24 the organization offered the program in 126 sites; 52% in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, 14% in Marin, 20% in SF County and 14% in San Mateo County. Over $400,000 of scholarship assistance was granted. Community Support: We were fortunate to be able to recruit 473 coaches for the two seasons, along with dozens of site liaisons. We also enjoyed over 1,500 volunteers helping predominantly at the 5K, either as running buddies or helping with the event logistics. Our Executive Board and Associate Board are highly engaged and assist the team with fundraising, events and strategic guidance. Completion of the Program: With small team sizes (a ratio of 3 adult coaches to 15 girls on the team), the GOTRBA program has a high completion rate. 98% of girls completed the season and 95% of girls attended the Girls on the Run 5K?s in Marina Park, San Leandro. The organization made a strategic decision to use unrestricted net assets to cover the college coach recruitment initiative. This initiative is the sole reason expenses were more than revenues in this fiscal year.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 10 funders to 18 funders, grant income rose $135k → $208k.

11 of 47 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 47% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Girls on the Run of the Bay Area Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 47 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Girls on the Run of the Bay Area Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 16% of grant income, and it takes 5 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 5 funders to its left

75% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Girls on the Run of the Bay Area Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $784k arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
