01What it does

What Gerdas Equine Rescue Inc does

Mission

The organization conducts programs that 1) rescue and rehabilitate animals (primarility horses), 2) promote and facilitate animal adoption, and 3) operate a facility where the program mission is accomplished.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Our mission is to primarily rescue horses that have run through auction only to be purchased by a kill buyer and will be sent on a horrific journey to Mexico to be slaughtered for human consumption outside the USA. These are the saddest, most hopeless group of horses you could ever imagine. Once they are in our care, we quarantine them for one month and begin to see what they are able to do, or not able to do any more. For those who survive we very carefully find safe loving homes. Homes are selected with the understanding that if they are no longer able to keep the horses adopted from us they must agree to return them to our rescue. The Organization also helps people local or otherwise who have horses that are unable to care for any longer by bringing them into our care and updating their medical needs and finding them homes as space allows; we rarely leave them with no options. We also educate the public by going into schools, hosting annual clinics, such as free castration, low fee dental clinics, and free winter blanket banks for people who are not able to afford these things for their horses. What is a labor of love, and we love making a small difference in this never-ending…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 11 funders, grant income rose $39k → $58k.

5 of 27 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 58% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GERDAS EQUINE RESCUE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GERDAS EQUINE RESCUE INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 37% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

64% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GERDAS EQUINE RESCUE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

43% of GERDAS EQUINE RESCUE INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 52% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

58% of GERDAS EQUINE RESCUE INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $168k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Vermont, across 14 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $235k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
