01What it does

What Friends of the WNC Nature Center Inc does

Mission

The Friends is a conservation organization that inspires a passion to know more, care more, and do more for the wildlife of the Southern Appalachians. We advance the critical work of the Nature Center through fundraising, membership, outreach education, marketing and volunteer service.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The Friends of the WNC Nature Center provided $760,309 to the WNC Nature Center in FY25. Donations were a combination of cash, services, in-kind, and volunteer hours. Through Friends support, the Nature Center finished and outfitted their new veterinary clinic; constructed the Gateway to the Southern Appalachians and Butterfly Pollinator Garden; and added necessary updates to the otter, black bear, and fox habitats.

  2. Breaking records set during The Great Flood of 1916, Tropical Storm Helene devastated the region in September 2024, and the WNC Nature Center was closed to the public for more than five months, reopening in March 2025. While the closure impacted attendance, membership numbers, and Gift Shop revenues, the Friends of the WNC Nature Center leaned into their mision of connecting people to the wildlife of the Southern Appalchians by providing hands-on, affordable outreach education to schools, libraries, and communities across the region.

  3. As a partner organization, the Friends organization operates the Gift Shop, Membership, Volunteer, and Outreach Education Programs and provides full marketing services to increase Nature Center admission numbers annually. 2025 was the WNC Nature Centers centennial year, and the 50th anniversary of the Friends. As part of the Gateway to the Southern Appalachians project, the side of the historic barn now tells the story of the WNC Nature Center with a colorful mural and a 75-foot history wall with panels sharing fun facts, important milestones, and photos and news articles from the past 100 years.

The 3 programs described on its FY2024 Form 990, listed largest first by expense. Program spending in total: $874,484.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 6 funders, grant income rose $11k → $28k.

7 of 22 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 59% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Friends of the WNC Nature Center Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Friends of the WNC Nature Center Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 37% of grant income and the top three 65%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

62% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Friends of the WNC Nature Center Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

33% of Friends of the WNC Nature Center Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 55% give in more than one year at all.

first grant+1y+2y+3y+4y

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

59% of Friends of the WNC Nature Center Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $174k that is directly attributable, 73% of it comes from North Carolina funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $253k arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
