What Friends of the Strand Inc does

Mission

It is the strand's mission to enrich and engage our regional community through diverse entertainment and memorable experiences for all. See schedule o, part 1, line 1 for additional details.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. As the last remaining historic theatre in cobb county, the strand is a landmark steeped in history on the marietta square. Originally built in 1935 by the manning-winks theatre company as an art deco movie palace. It is currently the home of the earl and rachel smith strand theatre, a nonprofit arts organization that lights up the square with films, concerts, musicals, plays, educational programming, and community gatherings. Whether patrons are interested in stepping back in time to glimpse a bygone era or looking forward to seeing current acts of today, the strand fills a critical niche in the local cultural landscape of marietta. The strand hosts a wide variety of art forms and community gatherings and provides a historic home for arts lovers to come together as a community.

  2. The organization is dedicated to the restoration and operation of the last remaining historic theatre in cobb county. By the early 2000s, the landmark had fallen into serious disrepair. A group of concerned civic leaders launched into action to re-open the theatre in 2008 and restored it to its former splendor. The theatre's physical assets ranging from the restored lumiere lounge to the open-air rooftop terrace are all essential pieces of the business model not directly associated with performances.

  3. The organization is dedicated to serving the community's need and growing demand for high-quality arts programming and education. The organization develops programs to introduce and garner a love for the arts in the young community members and students. This is accomplished through performing arts camps, workshops and productions specifically for and in many cases performed by students and youth.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 5 funders, grant income fell $50k → $27k.

4 of 15 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 61% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $282k from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Cobb Community Foundation Inc). These are real filings, and they are not money FRIENDS OF THE STRAND INC raised.

From the IRS filings of FRIENDS OF THE STRAND INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

FRIENDS OF THE STRAND INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 54% of grant income and the top three 76%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

85% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund FRIENDS OF THE STRAND INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

56% of FRIENDS OF THE STRAND INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 60% give in more than one year at all.

Where its funders are

61% of FRIENDS OF THE STRAND INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $353k that is directly attributable, 93% of it comes from Georgia funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $548k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
