What Equine Rescue of Aiken does
Mission
Equine Rescue of Aiken's mission is to rescue unwanted horses who have suffered from abuse and neglect. Equine Rescue of Aiken works with select race tracks to repurpose off the track thoroughbreds, then rehabilitates the horses with the goal to place them in "forever" homes. Along with rescuing horses already in trouble, educating the public on the plight of inhumanely treated animals is part of our mission. We hope to inspire the public, especially youth, on the proper treatment and respect that horses deserve.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Horse adoption program: we have a capacity of 65 horses in our care at one time available for adoption, but in an emergency situation, we can care for up to 70 horses temporarily. We may seek a foster situation for either an emergency situation or for a special needs horse, but we prefer our horses to be in our personal care.
$578,832 spent$30,775 earned by the program60% of program spendingHorse boarding: boarding is offered at our facility. Most of our boarders have adopted horses directly from us. On average, we provide this service for 9 horses.
County and local government support: Equine Rescue of Aiken supports city city of aiken and aiken county when they confiscate horses. We also support the city and county pre-trial intervention program by allowing offenders to earn community service hours at our facility. The pre-trial intervention program is a diversionary program designed for first time offenders of non-violent crimes, which allows them to avoid the court system by completing counseling, education, community service work, restitution, drug testing, and prison tours.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2019, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2019, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $1.8M to $2.1M (+19%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2020 4% · 2021 4%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
95% of EQUINE RESCUE OF AIKEN’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (74% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 10 funders, grant income fell $308k → $130k.
10 of 27 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 4% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of EQUINE RESCUE OF AIKEN’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
EQUINE RESCUE OF AIKEN leans on a few funders — its largest provides 66% of grant income and the top three 92%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
30% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund EQUINE RESCUE OF AIKEN.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 81% · 2018 40% · 2019 92% · 2020 73% · 2021 36% · 2022 64% · 2023 77% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
43% of EQUINE RESCUE OF AIKEN's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 59% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
EQUINE RESCUE OF AIKEN draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside South Carolina, across 12 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $117k arriving through sponsors registered in 10 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
