What Compassion International Incorporated does

Mission

Compassion exists to release children from poverty in Jesus' name. Compassion serves all children, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender.

As stated on its FY2019 Form 990.

Program

Child Development ProgramsThe child development programs represent costs to assist over 2.1 million and 1.92 million children in 2019 and 2018, respectively. Child development is a lifetime investment. It changes as a child's needs change. It is personal, individualized and relational work that is tailored to the age, gender, health, culture and family situation of each child Compassion serves. Through our child development programs, Compassion equips children with the skills they need to overcome poverty and lead successful, fulfilling lives.Compassion's Child Sponsorship Program (CDSP) pairs compassionate people with children suffering from poverty in the developing world. Through monthly financial support, prayer and letter writing, sponsors invest directly in the lives of children living in extreme poverty. Sponsors provide words of hope and encouragement through personal letters and notes that remind children of their full potential and help them to defeat poverty and pursue their dreams. Compassion processed nearly 9 million letters between sponsors and their children in 2019. Additionally, sponsors and donors have access to a centralized communication center to obtain…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 222 funders to 459 funders, grant income rose $14M → $48M.

104 of 941 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 78% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $18k from one payer (the payer's own filing calls it a related party, largest Amin Foundation). These are real filings, and they are not money Compassion International Incorporated raised.

From the IRS filings of Compassion International Incorporated’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 941 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Compassion International Incorporated has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 33% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

82% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Compassion International Incorporated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

57% of Compassion International Incorporated's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 68% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

78% of Compassion International Incorporated's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $56M that is directly attributable, 99% of it comes from funders outside Colorado, across 49 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $202M arriving through sponsors registered in 34 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
