01What it does

What Community Help in Park Slope Inc does

Mission

Community help in park slope, inc. ("chips") is a nonsectarian, voluntary, community-based new york not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1977. Its mission is twofold: to provide support and temporary housing to new and expectant mothers, and to feed those in need through their food pantry and soup kitchen.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Food distribution/hunger prevention - during 2024, chips greatly expanded our services to accommodate an increase in need, especially for our pantry services. We served approximately 190,000 meals, and distributed approximately 25,000 pantry bags to food insecure residents of our community. Our pantry program almost tripled from 2023 to 2024 as a result of the addition of our mobile pantry van late in 2023. This unbelievable response to food insecurity in nyc was accomplished with the help of volunteers, who provided over 38,000 hours of assistance.

    $2,316,229 spent
    79% of program spending
  2. Frances residence - during 2024 we provided housing assistance to fifteen homeless mothers, six of whom gave birth while at the frances residence. One of the mothers found permanent housing, three moved in with family, three returned to path (dhs shelter system), with one additional mother actively seeking permanent housing. Of the remaining eight residents, four were either employed or enrolled in a training course.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 49 funders, grant income rose $15k → $759k.

19 of 124 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 48% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of COMMUNITY HELP IN PARK SLOPE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 124 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

COMMUNITY HELP IN PARK SLOPE INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 15% of grant income, and it takes 7 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 7 funders to its left

58% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund COMMUNITY HELP IN PARK SLOPE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.0M arriving through sponsors registered in 15 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
