01What it does

What Christians Reaching Out To Society Inc does

Mission

CROS serves the hungry by distributing food at local pantries, recovering and distributing fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste, serving lunch at local meal sites, delivering prepared meals to the homebound.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Community Food Pantries CROS operates six food pantries. Five are in community partner buildings located in food-insecure communities. The sixth is a mobile pantry unit that serves multiple locations with distributions during evening and weekend hours, and which provides pantry access to people who have jobs or barriers to transportation. The pantries distribute bags of non-perishable food which last a minimum of four days. Fresh produce is distributed, when available, as well as frozen meats. In 2024, CROS pantries distributed food to 121,644 individuals (duplicated); 27% were children; 11% were seniors. In 2024, we had 9,033 individuals seeking food assistance for the first time at our pantries.

  2. Gleaning and Food RecoveryGleaning is the collection of crops either from farmers' fields that have already been mechanically harvested or from fields that are not economically profitable to harvest due to low market prices. Partnerships with local growers who allow access to fields provide fresh produce which is often lacking in the diets of people who are food insecure. CROS's Gleaning Program uses an army of approximately 4,400 volunteers to glean fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste. Partnering with local food banks, the fresh produce is distributed to meal kitchens and food pantries that feed the hungry. 463,474 pounds of produce was recovered in 2024.

  3. The Caring Kitchen The Caring Kitchen is a community-centered meal program that insures hungry people are fed six days of the week. Lunch is served Monday through Friday and bag lunches are distributed on Saturday. Meals are delivered to homebound clients by volunteers who also do health/welfare check-ins. The Caring Kitchen is a food recovery program that collects safe and wholesome food donated from commercial sources to meet the nutritional needs of the hungry. In 2024, we returned to our pre-COVID method of service with congregant meals instead of to-go style service. In 2024, the Caring Kitchen served 36,466 meals.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 15 funders to 25 funders, grant income rose $321k → $715k.

10 of 66 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 16% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Christians Reaching Out To Society Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 66 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Christians Reaching Out To Society Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 11% of grant income, and it takes 7 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 7 funders to its left

39% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Christians Reaching Out To Society Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $985k arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
