01What it does

What Causa Justa Just Cause does

Mission

Causa Justa::Just Cause builds grassroots power and leadership to create strong, equitable communities. We build solidarity between working class communities of color through rights-based services, policy campaigns, civic engagement and direct action.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2024 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.

As of December 2024, CJJC began winding down their programmatic operations in preparation for dissolving the organization. Remaining support staff consisting of volunteer board members and some consultants worked to close accounts no longer needed and clear liabilities, as well as assessing which organizations will receive distributions of remaining cash assets.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).

  1. Basebuilding: CJJC continued to provide updated resources and support for tenants via Know Your Rights trainings for tenants and via a hotline to counsel San Francisco tenants in their rights. Additionally, the immigrant community was outreached to and informed about their rights.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 11 funders to 15 funders, grant income fell $1.5M → $1.3M.

17 of 46 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 52% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Causa Justa Just Cause’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 46 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Causa Justa Just Cause leans on a few funders — its largest provides 29% of grant income and the top three 63%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

63% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Causa Justa Just Cause.

Where its funders are

52% of Causa Justa Just Cause's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $3.8M that is directly attributable, 82% of it comes from California funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $4.1M arriving through sponsors registered in 13 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
