What Cat Town does
Mission
Our mission is cats. Together, we save the lives of at-risk cats, find them loving homes, and advocate for a future where every cat is valued.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
Our rescue and adoption program provides a safety net for cats who would be euthanized at the shelter because they seem unadoptable there, and because there is no other local rescue group who would help these cats. During 2024, we maintained a program of approximately 50 foster cats at any given time, including seniors with medical needs, cats recovering from surgery and cats who were so stressed or shut down at the shelter as to be unadoptable there. At our adoption center - the first of its kind in the usa - we house up to 50 adoptable cats in a cage-free environment. (see full statement on schedule o)
$817,019 spent$51,397 earned by the program82% of program spendingThrough our education and public outreach programs, we inspire other animal welfare organizations to embrace and adapt our programs for their own communities. Through our partnership with maddie's fund, we have trained animal welfare professionals from 89 organizations across 32 states on assessing, rescuing, and adopting hard-to-place cats that are at high risk for euthanasia throughout many parts of the country.
$84,210 spent8% of program spendingThrough our pet retention programs, we enable adopters of Cat Town cats to keep their adopted pets in their homes. For all adopters, we offer extensive counseling and behavioral support via our case management program for a wide variety of behavior issues. Our in-it-for-life hospice program provides financial assistance to adopters of cats that have untreatable, terminal medical conditions, ensuring that the cost of veterinary care does not become a barrier to finding great homes for these cats in their final months or years

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2020 to 2021, from $450k to $916k (+104%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2021 4% · 2024 13%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
95% of CAT TOWN’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (74% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 16 funders, grant income fell $269k → $198k.
8 of 38 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 46% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of CAT TOWN’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 38 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
CAT TOWN has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 29% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left
51% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CAT TOWN.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 93% · 2018 61% · 2019 88% · 2020 27% · 2021 33% · 2022 28% · 2023 34% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
50% of CAT TOWN's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 61% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
83% of CAT TOWN's grant income comes from California funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $877k arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
