01What it does

What Bay Area Lyme Foundation does

Mission

The Bay Area Lyme Foundation's mission is (1) to accelerate the development of reliable diagnostic tools for all stages of lyme disease and a cure for late stage lyme through funding innovative scientific research; and (2) to foster prevention through education and awareness building.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. As an independent nonprofit organization, bay area lyme is able to partner with leading researchers and institutions all across the country to support the most innovative and promising projects in lyme disease research, regardless of affiliation. True breakthroughs will occur only through well-designed research projects and at bay area lyme, we have a rigorous screening and monitoring process, grant contingencies, and project reporting, to ensure that projects are effectively designed and funds well spent. In 2024, Bay Area Lyme Foundation funded 2 grants in the amounts of $379,172 and $100,000 to two institutions across the country for a total of $479,172. $379,172 was awarded to projects focused on improved diagnostics of lyme disease and other tick-borne infections; $100,000 awarded to improve therapies, and the remaining grants for ecology and awareness projects. Duke university received a grant of $370,447 to continue the work of the late dr. Neil spector on lyme disease. The 2024 emerging leader award totaling $150,000 was awarded to a therapies project at tufts university.

In 2024, bay area lyme entered into its fourth year of its partnership with the american junior golf association (ajga) providing its young members with tick prevention pouches that included a tick removal key, repellant and information about lyme disease and other tick borne infections. This multi-year partnership is targeting over 10,000 youths across the country. It was the premier sponsor of 2 tournaments both held in california. Two virtual speaker series events were held in 2024 - one in the spring in boston regarding a pediatric infectious disease physicians perspective on lyme disease and neuropsychiatric manifestations and one in the fall of 2024 where guests listened to an update on the ucsf new lyme clinical trials center.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 12 funders to 22 funders, grant income fell $1.5M → $1.1M.

13 of 68 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 46% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $4.4M from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Bay Area Lyme Major Gift Fund). These are real filings, and they are not money BAY AREA LYME FOUNDATION raised.

From the IRS filings of BAY AREA LYME FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 68 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

BAY AREA LYME FOUNDATION has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 23% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

55% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund BAY AREA LYME FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

33% of BAY AREA LYME FOUNDATION's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 51% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $7.6M arriving through sponsors registered in 11 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
