01What it does

What Wings for Success Inc does

Mission

Through our education and apparel programs, Wings for Success helps prepare and guide women in the ALICE(Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) bracket to continue achieving success in their professional journey and as a result build financial stability, rise above poverty, and build strong families.

As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.

Program

  1. Wings for Success was formed in 1997 by a community of women who recognized that not having work-appropriate attire was a barrier to finding a job. In addition to serving the unemployed, Wings for Success provides clothing for the under-employed/working-poor, and workshops that equip women with skills to maintain long-term employment or advance their careers. Equipping over 1,000 women a year, we embrace the differences of the the women we serve and seek to empower them regardless of age, race, religion physical abilities, economic status, gender identity, sexual preference, citizenship status, political affiliation, or other difference. Our actions are guided by a strategic plan that is consistent with our mission: to empower women in need to pursue employment and economic security through apparel, advice and advocacy. All decisions are made with ongoing commitment to the highest principles and practices of strong non-profit management and governance as demonstrated by fulfilling the requirements of the standards administered by the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 8 funders to 6 funders, grant income rose $40k → $63k.

4 of 33 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 14% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Wings for Success Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 33 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Wings for Success Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 19% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

45% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Wings for Success Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

26% of Wings for Success Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 52% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $68k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
