What Wild Earth Allies Inc does

Mission

Our mission is to protect vital areas of our planet for wildlife and people through local conservation action. Our vision is a world where wildlife and people flourish in healthy ecosystems that sustain us all.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Africa: Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC): With globally important tropical forests, DRC provides vital habitat for critically endangered wildlife such as Grauers gorillas and other at-risk species. We partner with Primate Expertise on community-based conservation in and around Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Itombwe Reserve, and on Idjwi Island. Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park is home to globally important biodiversity, including the endangered mountain gorilla. Building on decades of successful great ape conservation with Rwandas parks agency, we partner with the women-led cooperative Imbereheza Gahunga to drive grassroots engagement that benefits people and mountain gorillas. Cameroon: Dja Biosphere Reserve provides key habitat for critically endangered forest elephants, western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees and more. With partner African Conservation & Development Foundation (ACDEF) we are implementing a community-centered model to improve forest management, protect at-risk wildlife, and improve benefit flows to those living around the reserve.

  2. Southeast Asia: Cambodia: With some of the most intact forests and marine ecosystems in Southeast Asia, Cambodia is a vital refuge for threatened species such as Asian elephants, gibbons, pangolins, sea turtles and marine mammals. We collaborate with Government and community partners to conserve key habitat in ways that integrate cultural values and enrich local livelihoods.

  3. Americas: El Salvador: Hawksbill turtles are critically endangered globally, and fewer than 700 females remain in the Eastern Pacific with 50% of these nesting in El Salvador. With partner ProCosta and a dedicated community network, we engage coastal residents and fishers to increase hawksbill nest protection, reduce turtle bycatch, and improve human well-being. Costa Rica: Together with the Latin America Sea Turtle (LAST) Association, we are protecting critical areas for sea turtles, particularly leatherbacks and hawksbills, along the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. Belize: With the largest remaining rainforest area north of the Amazon basin, Belizes tropical forests are critical for biodiversity and our global climate. Our Trees of Belize project builds essential botanical skills, including tools for improved forest management. United States - Delaware: The Great Cypress Swamp is the largest remaining contiguous forest on the Delmarva Peninsula, providing habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife, mitigating climate change, and improving regional water quality. We work with land trust Delaware Wild Lands to restore this forested wetland and other key landholdings with native…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 18 funders to 34 funders, grant income rose $559k → $2.0M.

14 of 76 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 34% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Wild Earth Allies Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 76 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Wild Earth Allies Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 15% of grant income, and it takes 7 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 7 funders to its left

37% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Wild Earth Allies Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

49% of Wild Earth Allies Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 63% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $4.1M arriving through sponsors registered in 10 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
