01What it does

What Wild Bird Fund Inc does

Mission

Wild bird fund is a 501(c)(3) organization that cares for the injured, ill and orphaned wild life of new york city. Our mission is to provide veterinary care and rehabilitation to native and migrant wildlife and to educate new yorkers about the rich diversity and environmental needs of the city's wildlife.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. In 2025 wild bird fund treated a record 13,190 birds and other wildlife. We provide veterinary and rehabilitative care during hospitalization until the wildlife patient recovers from their injuries or illness. In the case of displaced or orphaned babies we raise the animal to adulthood, providing species-specifc nutrition and environmental enrichment. Care is provided seven days a week, 365 days a year. Our dedicated team of veterinarians, wildlife rehabilitators, animal care managers and trained volunteers evaluates each patient every day through its stay conducting: x-rays, diagnostic tests, surgery, splinting, wound care, antibiotics, pain relief and physical therapy. We also test and treat for parasites and lead or rodenticide poisoning and test for hpai, "bird flu." when the wiildlife patient is fully recovered they are released back to the wild or sent to other wildlife facilities for further care and re-conditioning in outdoor flight cages.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 25 funders to 50 funders, grant income rose $202k → $516k.

19 of 121 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 48% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of WILD BIRD FUND INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 121 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

WILD BIRD FUND INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 21% of grant income, and it takes 9 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 9 funders to its left

52% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund WILD BIRD FUND INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.0M arriving through sponsors registered in 11 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
