01What it does

What Weathervane Music Organization does

Mission

To advance independent music, art, and the communities that surround them.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Recording program this includes program activities previously reported separately as "shaking through", "open sessions", "recording workshops", and "edu program". The open sessions series is weathervane's newest experiment in non-profit music production and story telling. Each open session is a real recording session with an exciting new artist, held in front of a small audience. We capture video during the recording session to tell the artist's story and show the various stages and techniques of the recording process. Later, we release the music to our audience through digital channels (e.g. Youtube, streaming services, facebook, instagram, and tiktok), and like all weathervane recording programs, we share the multitracks from the recordings with donors and supporting members around the world. They download the high-quality production materials, remix them, and share their work back with the community on the weathervane website. In its second year, weathervane produced and released open sessions with two artists - philadelphia band gladie, and asheville, nc artist rachel angel. In addition, weathervane has continued to maintain its larger catalog of multitracks, making the…

  2. Consulting program since 2023, weathervane has provided consulting and fiscal sponsorship for small nonprofits outside of the philadelphia region. This project was largely inspired by the hundreds of correspondences we had over years (but particularly during the pandemic) with people hoping to unite their own creative work with community-focused projects where they live and work. In 2025, weathervane provided consulting and fiscal sponsorship for "lamplight avl", an artist residency program based in asheville, north carolina. Lamplight was interested in developing a business plan and securing their own 501(c)(3) status with the irs. Weathervane met with lamplight every two weeks through the duration of this consultancy, working through several iterations of project ideas, organizational branding, etc. The consultancy ended shortly after the 2025 fiscal year began, when lamplight received its nonprofit status, only weeks before hurricane helene wreaked havoc on their community. Since that time, lamplight has made artist recovery from that devastating event the focus of their work. In addition, we worked with "bring your song", a songwriting nonprofit organization based in akron,…

Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $12k → $29k.

4 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 48% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of WEATHERVANE MUSIC ORGANIZATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

WEATHERVANE MUSIC ORGANIZATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 46% of grant income and the top three 91%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

95% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund WEATHERVANE MUSIC ORGANIZATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $84k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
