01What it does

What USA International Ballet Competition does

Mission

The mission of the USA International Ballet Competition is to provide an opportunity for dancers to test themselves against recognized international standards of dance excellence; to provide an opportunity for dancers to showcase their technical skill and artistic talent

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The usa ibc is a two week "olympic style" competition where tommorrow's ballet stars vie for gold, silver and bronze medals, cash awards, scholarships and jobs. The competition is a stepping stone to a dancer's career. During 2024 (year ending 9/30/25), the ibc is promoting itself and recruiting competitors, jurors, dance school students, and faculty in preparation for the 2027 competition

  2. Citydance is an after school dance program sponsored by the USA International Ballet Competition. Citydance provides free ballet classes for children 7 years old to 12 years old that are also enrolled in the jackson public school system. Participants are selected through an audition process held each september. Each year citydance adds another class of beginners to the program as skill levels build.

  3. Friends of the usa ibc is an active membership group within the international ballet association. As volunteers, friends support the usa ibcs everyday needs and special projects. They plan fundraising and friends membership events, serve on competition work committees, assist with the public school citydance program (helping with auditions, dance wear purchases and recitals) and are local and national advocates for the usa ibc. Members (and future members) gather at least twice a year, once at a membership event and once at a fundraising event.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 8 funders, grant income rose $33k → $114k.

4 of 13 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 48% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of USA INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

USA INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 39% of grant income and the top three 67%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

51% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund USA INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

29% of USA INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 77% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $223k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
