01What it does

What University of Louisville Athletic Association does

Mission

The University of Louisville Athletic Association is organized to develop intercollegiate athletic teams composed of students of the University of Louisville and to schedule and manage intercollegiate athletic contests, all in the harmony with and in subjection to the general education policy of the University of Louisville.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. The University of Louisville Athletic Association reached new heights in academic achievement, setting a department record with a 96% Graduation Success Rate (GSR), as reported by the NCAA. This milestone reinforces the organization's trajectory of academic excellence, with 18 programs achieving a GSR of 90 or higher and nine programs recording a perfect 100 mark. Continuing this commitment, ten Cardinal programs-including Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Cross Country, Men's and Women's Golf, Men's Soccer, Softball, Women's Track and Field, and Volleyball-earned a perfect 1,000 Academic Progress Rate (APR) score. Every athletic program exceeded the required NCAA multi-year standards, ensuring robust eligibility and retention across the department. Supporting this dual-mission of excellence, the association provided vital scholarship support to nearly 850 student-athletes, enabling success both in the classroom and in competition. On the field, Louisville remained a premier national force, finishing 37th in the Learfield Directors' Cup. This marks the 15th consecutive season the Cardinals have ranked among the top 40 programs nationwide. Throughout the year, 10…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 6 funders, grant income rose $79k → $466k.

10 of 16 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 88% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $1.3M from 4 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest The Community Foundation of Louisville Corporate Depository Inc). These are real filings, and they are not money University of Louisville Athletic Association raised.

From the IRS filings of University of Louisville Athletic Association’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

University of Louisville Athletic Association leans on a few funders — its largest provides 33% of grant income and the top three 79%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

89% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund University of Louisville Athletic Association.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

67% of University of Louisville Athletic Association's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 56% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

88% of University of Louisville Athletic Association's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $354k that is directly attributable, 98% of it comes from Kentucky funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.7M arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
