What The Young Men's Christian Association of Greater New Orleans Louisiana does

Mission

To put christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Youth development. Our ymca is committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen. We believe that all kids are at risk and deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That's why we help young people cultivate the values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, and educational achievement. Our ymca programs such as adventure guides, aquatics, day camp and youth sports, offer a range of experiences that enrich cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. Financial assistance of $109,335 was given to 1,500 members. Income is shown net of financial assistance.

  2. Healthy living. The y is a leading voice on health and well-being. We bring families closer together, encourage good health, and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests. As a result, over 13,000 people in our community are receiving the support, training, and resources they need to achieve greater health in spirit, mind, and body. This is particularly important as our nation struggles with an obesity crisis, families struggle with work/life balance, and individuals search for personal fulfillment. Our programs are accessible, affordable, and open to all faiths, backgrounds, abilities, and income levels. In 2025, we provided $419,306 in financial assistance to 5,936 members who otherwise would have faced economic barriers to participation.

  3. Social responsibility. Our ymca believes in giving back and supporting our neighbors. We have been listening and responding to our community's most critical social needs for more than 173 years. Y programs, such as ymca educational services (yes!) adult literacy and workforce development programs are examples of how we deliver training, resources, and support that empower our neighbors to effect change, bridge gaps, and overcome obstacles. We provided $766,149 of services to 2,088 people who could not otherwise afford adult literacy services.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 7 funders to 16 funders, grant income rose $343k → $395k.

8 of 36 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 35% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF GREATER NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 36 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF GREATER NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 29% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

87% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF GREATER NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
