01What it does

What The West Virginia Land Trust Inc does

Mission

The wvlt protects "special places" in wv, which include lands that give wv its distinctive character and exhibit significant conservation values. Those values span a range of public benefits, including water quality protection, recreational opportunities, biological diversity, agricultural sites, and sites that protect cultural and historical resources. Wvlt also operates a significant outreach program that engages the public, agencies, and organizations in recognizing and enjoying the benefits of outdoor spaces that are available for public use.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Conservation of special places: wvlt protects land by acquiring properties in fee, through conservation easements, or by facilitating acquisitions (through negotiations or via loans) for other entities, including public agencies and other nonprofit organizations. Wvlt considers opportunities according to its conservation criteria and an assessment of properties' conservation values with an extensive process of due diligence. It acquires lands in fee through purchase (for which it raises funds), bargain sales, or donations. For conservation easements, wvlt works with voluntary landowners and evaluates properties according to its internal criteria and purposes as defined by the irs code. Easements may be acquired through purchase, bargain sales, or donations.

  2. Stewardship (property and easement maintenance): upon securing a conservation easement, the wvlt initiates an annual monitoring program to ensure that the covenants in the easement are adhered to and that the conservation values that have been recognized are protected in perpetuity. If there are violations of the easement, the wvlt will work with the owner to develop an action plan to mitigate any damages and if necessary, will legally defend the easement in court. When the land trust acquires property in fee, it determines the appropriate uses(s) for the land and elaborates a management plan that serves those uses. Those uses are developed with maximum public benefit in mind. On a preserve that is to be available to the public, those uses may include trail networks, streamside protection, or interactive services for educational purposes.

  3. Public education: as the only statewide land trust, the wvlt works to educate local groups and communities about the value of land conservation, both from an environmental and land use perspective. Strategies include development of web based materials, distribution of various printed materials, training and networking opportunities, educational workshops, presentation to civic organizations and attendance at community forums. Wvlt also hosts (alone or in partnerships) outings such as hikes, river floats, and other outdoor activities in order to encourage the public to enjoy the expanded portfolio of conserved lands around the state.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 7 funders, grant income rose $187k → $286k.

7 of 29 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 22% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE WEST VIRGINIA LAND TRUST INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE WEST VIRGINIA LAND TRUST INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 29% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

80% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE WEST VIRGINIA LAND TRUST INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

8% of THE WEST VIRGINIA LAND TRUST INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 45% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $445k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
