01What it does

What The Great Springs Project Inc (Audit) does

Mission

To help create a network of spring-to-spring trails and a corridor of protected lands over the edward's aquifer recharge zone, between san antonio and austin, texas.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. The organization worked to unify existing local efforts to address the most critical water, land, wildlife, and public health challenges facing the central texas region. In 2022, the organization released the great springs trails plan for the proposed 100+ mile spring-to-spring network of trails from the alamo to the capitol. This plan is a living document that serves as a resource for the completion of the trail network by the texas bicentennial in 2036. Sections of the trail will likely be built in phases, with the order of phases depending on key factors such as funding, landowner negotiation, establishing right-of-way, permitting, design, and construction. This plan represents a major step forward on the path to implementation. The organization is doing direct outreach to over 850 landowners over the recharge zone of the edwards aquifer between austin and san antonio to develop conservation projects with and securing trail right of way from willing landowners.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 20 funders, grant income rose $175k → $1.7M.

9 of 39 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 75% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE GREAT SPRINGS PROJECT INC (AUDIT)’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 39 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE GREAT SPRINGS PROJECT INC (AUDIT) leans on a few funders — its largest provides 69% of grant income and the top three 77%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

77% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE GREAT SPRINGS PROJECT INC (AUDIT).

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

60% of THE GREAT SPRINGS PROJECT INC (AUDIT)'s funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 49% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

75% of THE GREAT SPRINGS PROJECT INC (AUDIT)'s grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $2.1M that is directly attributable, 90% of it comes from Texas funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $6.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
