01What it does

What Surrey Services for Seniors Inc does

Mission

Surrey inspires and enables all of us, as we age, to live with independence and dignity, and as engaged members of the community.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2023 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.

Fy24 (july 1, 2023-june 30, 2024) was a year full of growth and change that led us to is a stronger more connected community (staff, board, volunteers, partners, and members) eager to work together to meet our short-term goals in fy24 and thoughtfully, strategically and realistically plan for surrey's future 3-5-7 years down the road. In the spring of 2024, surrey expanded into montgomery county with the opening of the surrey center for active aging on the campus of bryn mawr presbyterian church. The center has become a key resource for the large number of older adults who live independently in apartment houses in the area. The new bryn mawr center also houses the surrey academy, a program established in 2022 to address the shortage of caregivers in our region. In fy24 the academy more than doubled the number of graduates we trained and certified for a career in caregiving at surrey. Surrey provides this training at no cost to the individuals enrolled and pays them a stipend to go through the training program and funds this program through grants and donations

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).

  1. Home care services - one of the greatest advantages that sets surrey apart from other senior services organizations is the ability to coordinate and wrap critically needed services like transportation, nutrition, programs and activities, information, and support services around core home care services if needed. Surrey's home care program is a vital safety net for older adults who live at home, especially those who are alone, and most vulnerable. Surrey home care offers: rn care management services; medical procedure escort service; telehealth support; personal finance management; live-in care; personal care services; social companions; house cleaning and laundry. In fy 2024 there was a change in home care leadership and the program grew, with revenue exceeding budget by 6%. In the fiscal year ending june 30, 2024, surrey provided approximately 28,366 hours of home care services to 291 unduplicated clients, with an average of 39 caregivers, 3 rn's, 2 personal financial mangers and 1 social worker.

  2. Community services - surrey's comprehensive approach to aging in place includes a continuum of services provided by experienced nurses, trained social workers, experienced staff and volunteers, that enable older adults to receive the optimal level of help they need at all stages of the aging process, from those who are well and active, to those who are frail. Surrey's approach to aging services also includes community services provided by a small well-trained staff supported by hundreds of dedicated volunteers through our operations located in devon, media, broomall and bryn mawr. Our "neighbor helping neighbor" philosophy that began four decades ago with our founder, remains strong today. Our community services normally include free or low-cost programs and services, directly or in collaboration with other organizations. Additional funding was secured to cover our expenses for these services for older adults. In the fiscal year ending june 30, 2024, surrey served 3,684 unique individuals and provided 115,977 total touches (services/support) to older adults.in fy24, surrey provided the following services and programs for seniors in delaware, chester and montgomery counties:"…

  3. Transportation services: surrey offers extensive transportation services to meet the needs of seniors who no longer drive or have difficulties driving. Sometimes a ride to the grocery store, pharmacy, or doctor's appointment is all a senior needs to remain independent, healthy and active. Surrey has 10 paid part-time drivers, 2 sedans, a donated handicap accessible mini-van, two 12 passenger handicap accessible large vans, and an expansive group of volunteer drivers who provide rides and companionship to seniors in our community free of charge. With a new more expansive contract with chesco connect, chester county senior shared ride services, our transportation revenue was 60% over budget and rides increased by 42% yoy. In the fiscal year ending june 30, 2024, surrey provided approximately 10,983 rides to older adults in the tri-county region.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 10 funders to 32 funders, grant income rose $234k → $443k.

14 of 69 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 43% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SURREY SERVICES FOR SENIORS INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 69 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SURREY SERVICES FOR SENIORS INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 17% of grant income, and it takes 6 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 6 funders to its left

50% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SURREY SERVICES FOR SENIORS INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.7M arriving through sponsors registered in 10 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
