01What it does

What Sonoma Land Trust does

Mission

Protect the scenic, natural, cultural, agricultural and open landscapes of sonoma county for the benefit of the community and future generations by developing long-term land protection strategies; (continued on schedule o) promoting private and public funding for land conservation; acquiring land and conservation easements; practicing stewardship, including the restoration of conservation properties; promoting a sense of place and a land ethic through activities, education and outreach.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Land acquisitions: we work with landowners to assess and understand goals for their properties, which can lead to an acquisition of property or conservation easement, or a transfer of property to the public. Transactions are negotiated to provide the best outcome for the landowner with the ultimate goal of permanently preserving land whether the final ownership is private or public. Land stewardship: we work with the land and community to restore and protect native habitats, creeks, wildlife corridors, productive farms and ranches, and other permanently protected private lands under our care. The program currently stewards 24 conservation properties totaling more than 6,900 acres and actively (continued on schedule o) monitors 47 conservation easement properties totaling more than 8,100 acres. Community programs: we offer a variety of activities, education and outreach aimed at engaging audiences as diverse as the lands and communities we represent. Offerings include on-the-land, virtual and volunteer experiences in addition to education programs, including school field trips and teen educational programs.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 35 funders to 51 funders, grant income fell $3.3M → $1.6M.

25 of 116 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 39% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SONOMA LAND TRUST’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 116 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SONOMA LAND TRUST has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 37% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

46% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SONOMA LAND TRUST.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

51% of SONOMA LAND TRUST's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 68% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $8.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 15 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
