01What it does

What Soho Repertory Theatre Inc does

Mission

Soho repertory provides radical theater makers with productions of the highest caliber and tailor-made development at key junctures in their artistic practice. We elevate artists as thought leaders and citizens who change the field and society. Artistic autonomy is paramount at soho rep. - we encourage an unmediated connection between artists and audiences to create a springboard for transformation and rich civic life beyond the walls of our small theater.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Soho repertory produces 3 productions each year by radical theater makers at critical junctures in their artistic practice. Tickets are sold to the public at affordable prices, generally 20 to 35 dollars.

$1,910,580 spent$233,413 earned by the program
    77% of program spending
  2. The soho repertory writer director lab fosters meaningful collaboration between early career writers and directors. Four writer director pairs generate a new play from scratch under the guidance of established co-chairs. The plays are then presented in a free public reading series.

    4% of program spending
  3. Through project number one (pn1), soho rep provides production fees and salaries for all writers, directors, designers, actors, and stage managers that are equivalent to administrative staff salaries and accurately reflect the time that people spend creating work for the theater. The theater also invites artists to be in residence as project number one artists on staff.

  4. Soho repertory commissions and develops new work through the studio program. Highly individualized studio workshops bring new plays palpably closer to production-readiness. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 13 funders to 25 funders, grant income rose $320k → $951k.

16 of 57 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 26% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SOHO REPERTORY THEATRE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 57 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SOHO REPERTORY THEATRE INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 21% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

30% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SOHO REPERTORY THEATRE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.7M arriving through sponsors registered in 11 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
