What Second Chances Garage Inc does

Mission

Mission: we give second chances to vehicles and the people who need them. Our mission is to provide affordable transportation solutions that help wage-earning individuals and families with low incomes overcome barriers to maintaining employment, pursuing better-paying jobs, attending school, accessing healthcare, and meeting family responsibilities.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The low-cost vehicle program refurbished and placed 43 vehicles with neighbors in need. The program also provided 235 free repairs, oil changes, and/or labor services to help recipients keep their vehicles safely on the road. An additional 62 donated vehicles were refurbished and returned to the road through our lot sales program at below-market prices, providing affordable vehicle options to members of the community.

  2. The reduced-cost vehicle repair program made essential vehicle repairs affordable for 619 individuals and families who might otherwise have been forced to delay repairs or stop driving altogether. By providing labor and parts at approximately half the typical market cost, the program helped neighbors keep their vehicles safe, reliable, and on the road protecting their ability to get to work, attend school, access healthcare, care for their families, and remain connected to essential services.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 13 funders, grant income rose $27k → $115k.

2 of 17 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 25% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SECOND CHANCES GARAGE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SECOND CHANCES GARAGE INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 25% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

64% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SECOND CHANCES GARAGE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

78% of SECOND CHANCES GARAGE INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 53% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $202k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
