01What it does

What Royal African Foundation Inc does

Mission

The foundation's mission is to create and nurture projects which benefit communities, wilderness and wildlife.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Education sponsorships: the royal african foundation believes in the power of education and sponsors students to achieve their dreams of finishing their schooling. Over the lifetime of this project, many of our previous students have become forces for positive change for their rural communities and the wilderness areas they come from. In 2025, 54 students were sponsored at varying levels of education across kenya, tanzania and uganda through this program. We look forward to continuing to sponsor these and more students who come to us for help to stay in school when they would not otherwise be able to.

  2. The sand river region: the royal african foundation funds strategic programs to protect the sand river's migration routes that link the mara, serengetti, and rift valley ecosystems. Among the most biodiverse areas on earth, it faces growing threats from land subdivision and unplanned development, which disrupt wildlife movement and increase human-wildlife conflcit. To address this, we support community education, enterprise, health, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation projects. We also support biodiversity research and monitoring, and advocacy efforts to preserve this essential landscape for people and wildlife alike.

  3. In 2025, the royal african foundation completed the construction of a new kitchen and dining hall at lpus leluai school in westgate, samburu, the latest milestone in a partnership stretching back to 2008. The school, which serves 330 students right on the western edge of samburu national park, has been transformed by sustained investment over the years, and is now the best-performing school in its sub-county and among the top ten in all of samburu county. These newest facilities join a growing list of completed infrastructure, including lights, fencing, toliets, and boarding house improvements, all of which continue to improve daily life and safety for the school's students, staff, and the wildlife they live alongside.

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 8 funders, grant income rose $3k → $274k.

10 of 16 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 96% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ROYAL AFRICAN FOUNDATION INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ROYAL AFRICAN FOUNDATION INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 57% of grant income and the top three 79%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

96% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ROYAL AFRICAN FOUNDATION INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.0M arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
