01What it does

What Reading Team Inc does

Mission

The reading team runs two early literacy programs: (1) preschool - 2x/week (2-hrs/session) teachers instruct 3 and 4 year old children on phonemic awareness, letter recognition, and sound manipulation. (2) after-school - 5x/week (2.5-hrs/session) teachers instruct children in grades k-5 on phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, literary devices, and writing.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. The reading team preschool program is an intensive and multifaceted early literacy intervention that serves children from neighborhood day care centers and head start programs. This program enables the children we serve to develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are developmental precursors to reading and writing. It is administered by trained, paid teaching staff called literacy mentors. The reading team after-school program serves children in kindergarten through fifth grade who typically are referred to us by their teachers because they are struggling to keep up in the classroom and sometimes because they have classroom behavior problems as well. The reading team engages the children in a wide range of literacy-nurturing activities that enable them to make significant gains in reading ability their first year in the program. More than 80% of reading team children have historically passed the new york state english language arts exam given starting in 3rd grade (on average in harlem, only 30% of children pass this exam)the after-school program is administered by trained, paid teachers known as literary mentors. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 12 funders to 23 funders, grant income rose $342k → $375k.

12 of 66 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 18% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of READING TEAM INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 66 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

READING TEAM INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 7% of grant income, and it takes 10 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 10 funders to its left

29% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund READING TEAM INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $719k arriving through sponsors registered in 10 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
