01What it does

What Project Mkc does

Mission

To make the lives of children and their families a little brighter by focusing on their individual needs with the help of volunteers.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Diaper bank - Project Mkc's diaper bank addresses a critical unmet need by providing diapers to vulnerable members of our community. Through a network of partner agencies, Project Mkc distributes more than 100,000 diapers each month. Partner agencies then provide the diapers directly to families experiencing financial hardship.

  2. Best foot forward - the best foot forward program partners with local school guidance counselors to identify students in need of appropriate winter footwear. Eligible students attending schools in mahoning and trumbull counties, where at least 45% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, receive a new pair of winter boots and socks. The program helps remove barriers to school attendance and promotes the health, safety, and well-being of children during the winter months.

  3. Comfort kit supplies - the comfort kit supplies program provides age- and gender-appropriate care packages to children who are entering foster care through mahoning county children services. Each comfort kit contains new essential and comfort items, including toiletries, clothing, personal care items, school supplies, toys, and other age-appropriate necessities. The program is designed to help ease the transition into foster care by ensuring children have basic necessities and a sense of comfort during a difficult time.

  4. Other program services - through partnerships with county agencies and other community-based social service organizations, the organization distributes approximately 100,000 diapers each month to families experiencing financial hardship. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 12 funders, grant income rose $47k → $52k.

4 of 33 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 33% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of PROJECT MKC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 33 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

PROJECT MKC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 14% of grant income, and it takes 5 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 5 funders to its left

51% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund PROJECT MKC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

61% of PROJECT MKC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 64% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $159k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
