01What it does

What People Animals Love Inc does

Mission

The organization's mission is to sponsor programs for adults and children that demonstrate how the special bond between animals and humans can make a unique contribution in solving challenging societal needs.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

On its FY2023 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.

To better focus on people animals love's mission, the organization discontinued two programs in 2023. The virtual pal visiting program, through which volunteers and their animal companions provided online opportunities for reading, music, art, and social interaction programs to children and seniors, was discontinued. This program had been launched in 2020 to provide services to those affected by the pandemic lockdown. People animals love continues to provide support to a few nonprofit groups (e.g., the children's brain tumor foundation) to provide a platform for virtual pet meetings to their beneficiaries. After an extensive feasibility assessment process, people animals love also discontinued development of a virtual visitation program for children's hospitals. People animals love concluded that it was not possible to effectively develop and manage the program without a full-time, dedicated child life specialist on staff, while also sustaining pal's in-person visiting program, meeting the growing demand for in-person visits, and aligning our work with standards of practice in animal-assisted interventions.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).

  1. In person animal-assisted support program (in-person therapy team visits): volunteers and their dogs, who are screened, assessed, trained, and credentialed as pal therapy dog-handler teams, visit people in the washington dc metro area to promote their health and wellbeing. All visits are provided within the united states. Most visits are with older adults, children, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable populations such as people who are ill, grieving, unhoused, incarcerated, or socially isolated and lonely. Therapy teams also help "the helpers" by supporting frontline workers such as healthcare and hospice staff; teachers and school administrators; police officers; veterans; and families and caregivers of those who are ill or at the end of life. Our "read to a dog" visits in schools and libraries help children build their reading skills, confidence, and empathy. In 2023, more than 200 pal teams made more than 2,500 impactful visits at 282 different sites. On each of these visits, pal teams may meet with as few as one person, or as many as 50+ people. Because the exact number of people that pal teams visit with cannot be accurately tracked, pal estimates that 82,000…

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 3 funders, grant income rose $5k → $32k.

5 of 14 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 20% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of PEOPLE ANIMALS LOVE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

PEOPLE ANIMALS LOVE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 30% of grant income and the top three 70%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

76% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund PEOPLE ANIMALS LOVE INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $80k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
