Programs

  1. Catalyzing Action: Across the nation, PHA collaborates with cross-sector partners (public, private, charitable) to advance equitable access to nutritious food for all in America to lead healthy lives. Our diverse programs include Good Food at Home that provides participating families with servings of fruits and vegetables delivered to their doorstep or through weekly produce boxes for a minimum of 12 weeks, creating a long-lasting habit of produce. Healthy Hunger Relief that recognizes, elevates, and accelerates the work of food banks across the country that are uplifting the health and well-being of their communities. Regional Food Systems Transformation, including in the Mississippi Delta, that focuses on community-driven change to increase the consumption of vegetables and fruits by building a greater local supply and increasing demand. And, Good Food Cities, which works as a collective impact model to increase access to and awareness of nutritious food through a variety of programming, community investments, and marketing efforts.

Through these partnerships, PHA coordinates efforts to promote more nutritious options and encourage corporate partners to make commitments to increase servings of nutritious food and to provide greater access to nutritious food using their products and services.

  3. Convening: Bringing together leaders from across the public, private, nonprofit and philanthropic sectors is critical to ensuring that everyone in the United States, no matter their zip code, has access to foods that build health. PHA brings people together to challenge our current food system and shift the paradigm towards good food and healthier communities with all of our events, but in particular through our annual Summit. Indirect costs, such as personnel costs and occupancy, related to the planning of these events are expensed as incurred.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 9 funders to 10 funders, grant income fell $2.7M → $478k.

17 of 53 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 61% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Partnership for a Healthier America Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 53 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Partnership for a Healthier America Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 47% of grant income and the top three 72%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

66% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Partnership for a Healthier America Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

61% of Partnership for a Healthier America Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $13M arriving through sponsors registered in 14 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
