01What it does

What Maryland Art Place Inc does

Mission

Maryland art place was established to develop and maintain an environment for artists to exhibit their work and facilitate exchanges between artists and the public through educational leadership.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Maryland arts place map inspires, supports, and encourages artistic expression through innovative programming, exhibitions, and educational opportunities while recognizing the powerful impact art can have on our community. Map creates a dynamic environment for artists of our time to engage with the public by nurturing and promoting new ideas. Map has served as a critical resource in the mid-atlantic area since 1981. Map primarily supports emerging and mid-career visual artists often providing a vital foundation for art students entering the workforce by bridging the gap between commercial galleries and museums. On average, map directly serves approximately 500-600 artists, and indirectly serves closer to 3,000 individual artisrs each year. Maps role as the caretaker of the maryland state arts directory plays a significant role in our reach and focus on maryland based artists.

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 16 funders, grant income rose $22k → $757k.

7 of 26 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 18% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $420k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
