01What it does

What Land Conservancy of West Michigan does

Mission

Our mission is conserving West Michigans ecologically critical land. We protect land by creating public nature preserves, providing support to communities and local governments in creating natural areas, and helping private landowners protect their own land.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The Land Conservancy of West Michigan works with contractors, interns and volunteers in stewardship activities that provide for the management and restoration of our diverse network of dune, grassland, wetland and forested preserved lands. We coordinate with area schools, businesses and organizations to provide research, service learning and hands-on field opportunities at our preserves. We organize and lead workshops and trainings for the benefit of the public. These provide the tools and inspiration for all citizens to become better stewards of their community.

We do this by (1) establishing conservancy-owned nature preserves that are open to the public, (2) working with landowners to create conservation easements that protect natural habitats and open spaces on private property and (3) working in partnership with government agencies and communities to create parks and natural areas open to the public for their enjoyment and study of nature.

  3. The Land Conservancy provides outreach and communications to key audiences throughout our service area. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 18 funders to 23 funders, grant income fell $1.4M → $334k.

16 of 54 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 59% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Land Conservancy of West Michigan’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 54 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Land Conservancy of West Michigan has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 23% of grant income, and it takes 5 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 5 funders to its left

74% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Land Conservancy of West Michigan.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

47% of Land Conservancy of West Michigan's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 69% give in more than one year at all.

first grant+1y+2y+3y+4y+5y+6y

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

59% of Land Conservancy of West Michigan's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $1.7M that is directly attributable, 61% of it comes from Michigan funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.5M arriving through sponsors registered in 10 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
