01What it does

What International Essential Tremor Foundation does

Mission

The IETF provides hope to the ET community worldwide through awareness, education, support, and research.

As stated on its FY2026 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Essential tremor (ET) is a neurological condition that mostly causes a rhythmic trembling of the hands while performing a task such as eating, writing, dressing, or drinking. (1) Each March the International Essential Tremor Foundation (IETF) hosts a special campaign to raise awareness about essential tremor during National Essential Tremor Awareness Month (NETA). Our goal is to achieve a greater understanding and acceptance of essential tremor. (2) Essential Tremor Research James Parkinson first distinguished essential tremor from other tremor disorders (including the disease that carries his namesake) in 1817. More than 200 years later, there are still many unanswered questions about essential tremor. However, researchers are moving our knowledge forward. It is vital to understand what causes ET in order to develop tailored treatment options and a cure for this life-altering condition. IETF Funded Research Essential tremor (ET) has no cure. If only we understood the cause of ET, then new, tailored treatments could be developed. Each year researchers with an interest in studying the various aspects of essential tremor are encouraged to submit scientific proposals for grant…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 9 funders, grant income fell $43k → $35k.

10 of 26 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 88% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of INTERNATIONAL ESSENTIAL TREMOR FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

INTERNATIONAL ESSENTIAL TREMOR FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 38% of grant income and the top three 70%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

88% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund INTERNATIONAL ESSENTIAL TREMOR FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

46% of INTERNATIONAL ESSENTIAL TREMOR FOUNDATION's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 54% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

88% of INTERNATIONAL ESSENTIAL TREMOR FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $62k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Kansas, across 13 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $479k arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
