01What it does

What Illuminative Inc does

Mission

Our mission is to build power for native peoples by amplifying contemporary native voices, stories, and issues to advance justice, equity, and self-determination. We utilize research, narrative and culture change strategies, movement-building, and organizing to disrupt the invisibility of native peoples, re-educate americans, and mobilize public support for key native issues.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2025 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.

On february 14, 2025, the board voted and approved the voluntary winding up and dissolution of the illuminative corporation and illuminative media, llc. The organizations ceased operations effective december 31, 2025.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).

  1. Narrative power and impact (npi) houses research-informed storytelling, digital organizing, narrative strategy, media relations, and rapid response communications that educate, engage and activate native and allied audiences around key native issues. Through this program, we build narrative power for native peoples by generating, activating, and investing in native authored narratives and creative content across media platforms to grow and mobilize mass audiences who better understand and support native perspectives.in 2025, we completed a full website refresh to center our historical and new research. Illuminative launched indigenous house, a project to invest directly into content creators to develop audiences that are value aligned. The project is an opportunity for experimentation, learning, and creativity, as it seeks to replicate successful narrative ecosystem models for values aligned content. By leveraging values-based messaging, we can build a narrative that resonates with a broad audience and create a sense of shared purpose and commonality that bridges societal divides. Illuminative also transitioned our main social media channels in service of the legacy program…

  2. Pop culture & media seeks to advance institutional equity for native peoples throughout the entertainment and media ecosystem. Through this pillar, we educate and engage industry professionals in best practices for native representation, support native creatives through career pathway programs, and engage in internal and external advocacy, accountability and content and talent tracking to create structural change. Illuminative was honored to present the top-level findings of our research at the national congress of american indians annual conference in october 2025.

  3. Research and action (r+a) partners with leading native scholars, institutions, and organizations to initiate and activate original research studies for and about native peoples that inform all other areas of our work. We ensure that native voices, perspectives, and experiences are included as important and valuable sources of innovative solutions, inquiry, and examination and make findings accessible and actionable for our communities and allies to advance justice, equity, and self-determination for native peoples.in 2025 our efforts brought forth new research. Specifically, a nielsen survey refresh, surveying both native and non-native focus groups and social media platform analysis along with focus groups of both native and non-native us citizens.

  4. Advocacy and engagement (a+e) lays the groundwork for broad narrative and cultural change for native people by amplifying contemporary native issues and voices through a broad network that spans both inside and outside of indian country. Leveraging research and organizing approaches, a+e develops cross-cutting campaigns and strategic engagements to activate and educate our network to advocate for key native issues in multiple spheres (e.g., judicial, political, media, hollywood, climate justice) to shift attitudes, behaviors, and actions.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

10 of 31 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 61% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ILLUMINATIVE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 31 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ILLUMINATIVE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 33% of grant income and the top three 71%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

76% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ILLUMINATIVE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

61% of ILLUMINATIVE INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $7.5M that is directly attributable, 95% of it comes from funders outside Washington, D.C., across 8 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $12M arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
