01What it does

What Homework Central does

Mission

The mission of Homework Central is to foster academic success to low-income and disadvantaged elementary school children by providing free tutoring and family support services.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. During fiscal year 2024-2025, Homework Central delivered 30-34 weeks of support to serve nearly 200 registered elementary school-aged children and their families. Including the past year, Homework Central has served San Mateo children for twenty-seven years, helping them develop academic practices and habits, forge positive relationships with tutors and take greater ownership of their education and future. Homework Central has two primary activities: This first is an afterschool program that offers free tutoring and homework completion to students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged who, by teacher recommendation, would benefit from tutoring. In addition, a literacy program was introduced in 2022 to younger students. The tutoring and literacy content is provided in person by trained staff and volunteers in a small group setting. The program includes provision of snacks to all students every day of operation. The second activity is free family engagement events to provide school-related information, encourage and educate families or caregivers (many English as a Second Language households) to help their child's academic journey. This is done through Family Night events each…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 6 funders, grant income fell $71k → $70k.

9 of 19 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 15% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Homework Central’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 18 of 19 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Homework Central leans on a few funders — its largest provides 36% of grant income and the top three 63%; half comes from just 2 funders.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

54% of Homework Central's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 47% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $137k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
