Mission

Hagley Museum and Library seeks to inspire all people to be innovative in their own lives through investigation and exploration of our historical collections, the original DuPont powder yard, and online resources.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Hagley Museum is located on 235 acres along the banks of the Brandywine River in Wilmington, Delaware. Hagley is the site of the gunpowder works founded by E. I. du Pont de Nemours in 1802. This example of early American industry includes restored mills, a workers' community, and the ancestral home and gardens of the du Pont family. Hagley exhibits objects and artifacts that interpret the unfolding history of American business, technology, and innovation, and its impact on the world.

Each year hundreds of scholars come to the Library to do research using Hagley's materials and archives. In 1986, the Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society was organized to administer Hagley's interactions with the world of scholarship.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 13 funders to 19 funders, grant income fell $678k → $511k.

9 of 41 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 12% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 41 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 20% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $654k arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
