01What it does

What Edisto Island Open Land Trust does

Mission

The mission of the organization is to preserve the rural quality of life on edisto by protecting lands, waterways, scenic vistas, and heritage through conservation and education.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Edisto Island Open Land Trusts main goal is to preserve and protect the land that makes edisto island special. This is accomplished primarily by accepting conservation easement donations from concerned landowners or purchasing fee ownership of land. The organization currently protects over 4,200 acres of land. Most of that land is protected through conservation easements on private property. The organization follows land trust alliance practices to ensure ethical and responsible operations of the organization as a land trust, and is a nationally accredited land trust. The land trust also oversees the legacy live oak program, stewardship projects, and efforts towards improving water quality in edisto island creeks.

  2. The hutchinson house, constructed around 1885, is one of the oldest surviving houses built by african americans during the reconstruction era on edisto island. When the property went for sale, a community wide push was made to purchase the property to preserve the home. The Edisto Island Open Land Trust stepped up as the organization to purchase the home. With the financial assistance of the charleston county greenbelt program, the organization was able to purchase the adjacent 9 acre parcel in 2019 to buffer the home from residential development. Now the Edisto Island Open Land Trust owns the home and the land it sits on with the goal of restoring the home, interpreting the history of the land, and building a community driven public greenspace for edisto island.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 14 funders, grant income rose $12k → $888k.

7 of 27 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 14% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of EDISTO ISLAND OPEN LAND TRUST’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

EDISTO ISLAND OPEN LAND TRUST leans on a few funders — its largest provides 40% of grant income and the top three 74%; half comes from just 2 funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $320k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
