01What it does

What Earn to Learn Fl Inc does

Mission

Earn to learn fl's mission is to empower income challenged students to successfully complete college, based on matched savings for education, near peer coaching, and personal financial training.

As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Matched savings for education: students and their families who income- qualify are eligible to apply for a 1,3,or 4-year tuition scholarship upon completing personal finance training and opening a florida 529 savings account. The funds - etlfl matched savings for education scholarship plus florida 529 savings account - are used for tuition, books, fees, and other approved educational related expenses at a florida state university, college, or career and technical education center. Earn to learn fl leveraged a modest 100,000 u.s. Department of health & human resources (assets for independence) grant in 2016 into a viable and scalable program. Since then, etlfl has raised over 1.8 million in individual corporate, and academic institution philanthropy in florida to provide annually renewable matched savings for education scholarships to 125+ eligible students, with additional future student scholarships in inventory purchased and leveraged through partnership with the florida prepaid college foundation. In addition to scholarship funding, the eligible etlfl students will aim to save over 250,000 to invest in their education through fl 529 accounts, with additional 529 savings…

  2. Near peer coaching for postsecondary success: etlfl trains and deploys near peer coaches to support income challenged students in the areas of postsecondary access, personal finance training, and career planning. Near peer coaches support student preparation and success strategies to successfully pursue their higher education. Etlfl recruits, trains, and deploys near peer success coaches (americorps members) to provide near-peer interventions to disadvantaged high school students and first-generation college students. By the end of each program year (august 1 - july 31), the near peer success coaches are responsible for providing individual higher education advisory interventions to students to successfully complete 1) personal finance training, 2) career plan development, 3) college and majors list development, 4) postsecondary application strategy, and 5) scholarship and financial aid strategy. The near peer success coaches also leverage career guidance counselors engaged in implementing college and career fairs, conducting group workshops, and facilitating college visits to a broader population of students at each partner service site. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 4 funders, grant income rose $28k → $41k.

11 of 16 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 44% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of EARN TO LEARN FL INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

EARN TO LEARN FL INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 26% of grant income and the top three 69%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

96% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund EARN TO LEARN FL INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

25% of EARN TO LEARN FL INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 56% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $259k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
