01What it does

What Dog Gone Seattle does

Mission

Dog Gone Seattle is a Washington-based nonprofit organization dedicated to saving homeless dogs in high-kill shelters in Washington and beyond through rescue, foster, and adoption. We are a foster-based organization, and our rescue is 100% funded through adoption fees and donations. We believe every dog deserves a chance at a forever home, and we aim to make a difference in the lives of these deserving animals, one dog at a time.

As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Dog Gone Seattle has rescued over 6,000 unwanted dogs since 2017. We are a foster and volunteer based rescue organization, which allows us to give each dog the special care and training needed to find the right fit in a loving forever home. Every dog that comes into our rescue receives a veterinary exam including vaccinations, spay and neuter and microchipping prior to adoption. We rely on adoption fees and donations from the general public to fund our organization. In a calendar year, we host 45-50 adoption events allowing the public to meet our adoptable dogs. Our adoption process includes an application, in person meeting(s) and reference checks to ensure the best possible placement for our dogs. If the dog is not a good fit for the family we take our dog back into our rescue. In addition to adoption events, we host several small community based fundraising events a year (raising less than $3,000 per event). Dog Gone Seattle proudly takes on many dogs that other shelters cannot help, including dogs with behavioral issues or special medical needs. We have rehabilitated dogs with aggression issues, reactivity, and separation anxiety; likewise we have rehabilitated dogs with…

  2. The organiztion has raised $215,000 for its wellness and growth initiative. The wellness and growth initiative(wag) is to support a vision of affordable and accessible veternariay care for dogs in rescue and in the comunity at large. The wag initiavtive seeks to build out a veterinary clinic in the community center over the next 2-4 years. The initiative helped host spay and neuter days with the fixers collective in 2025 altering over 80 dogs for Dog Gone Seattle and other local rescues.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 9 funders, grant income rose $32k → $137k.

6 of 21 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 79% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of DOG GONE SEATTLE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

DOG GONE SEATTLE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 45% of grant income and the top three 72%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

89% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund DOG GONE SEATTLE.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

50% of DOG GONE SEATTLE's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 52% give in more than one year at all.

Where its funders are

79% of DOG GONE SEATTLE's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $119k that is directly attributable, 58% of it comes from Washington funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $442k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
