What Daya Inc does

Mission

Daya empowers survivors of domestic and sexual violence through services such as counseling, transitional housing, translation and interpretation, legal advocacy, and financial support, and educates the community to end the cycle of abuse. While Dayas services are open to all adult survivors, the organization has deep cultural expertise in supporting the South Asian community.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

In 2023, Daya served a total of 619 clients. 62 clients received licensed counseling, 52 families received housing assistance, 301 received some form of legal assistance, and 48 received assistance to achieve their educational, financial, or employment goals. Daya held 14 outreach events reaching 2,430 community members. This is particularly helpful as the primary referral source to Daya is members of the community. Moreover, Daya conducted 43 training sessions to equip 2,844 professionals and completed orientations with 15 new volunteers with best practices and cultural considerations when working with South Asian survivors of violence. Finally, 12,291 community members attended 75 community education sessions to increase their knowledge about domestic violence, sexual assault, and challenges faced by South Asian survivors.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 13 funders to 23 funders, grant income rose $136k → $441k.

8 of 53 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 48% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Daya Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 53 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Daya Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 40% of grant income and the top three 65%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

76% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Daya Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.5M arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
