01What it does

What Complete College America Inc does

Mission

Complete College America is a national non-profit organization working with states to significantly improve college completion and to close attainment gaps for underrepresented populations.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Complete College America (CCA) builds movements for scaled change and transforms institutions. We envision a nation in which postsecondary institutions, policymakers, and systems of higher education welcome, invest in, and support students through and to on-time completion so that every student-regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or familial educational achievement- has equal opportunity to access and complete a college education or credential of value. To turn this vision into reality, we work to shift policy, perspective, and practice through both systemic and institutional change. Specifically, CCA drives systemic change that leads to better college completion rates; more equitable outcomes; and greater economic and social mobility, especially for historically excluded students. CCA operates at the federal, state, and institutional levels and works with its national network of forward-thinking state and higher education leaders. In 2024, CCA scaled proven strategies through major initiatives like the new Complete College Accelerator, which is working closely with more than 100 institutions across 18 states. We also released our latest publications, including:…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 11 funders, grant income rose $2.2M → $6.6M.

3 of 23 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 6% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is

Complete College America Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 68% of grant income and the top three 80%; half comes from just 1 funder.

How long its funders stay

25% of Complete College America Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 57% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $3.0M arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
