01What it does

What Stand Up America Inc does

Mission

Stand up america was established to educate, organize, and mobilize americans to protect and strengthen our democracy. We are working at the local, state, and federal levels to increase voter participation and build a more representative democracy by passing legislation that would expand voting rights, reduce the impact of big money in elections, reform our supreme court, fight corruption, and end undemocratic barriers that have been built to impede these policies.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Stand up america advocates for government policies that will strengthen our democracy and increase access to voting and opposes policies that threaten our democracy and our freedom to vote. We educate and mobilize our members using email, sms, and social media communications, as well as mobilize activists outside our community through texting, digital ads, and social media. In 2024, stand up america's members took action in every state to combat voter suppression, expand access to the ballot box, fight corruption, reform the supreme court, and build a more representative democracy. Together, they made more than 26,000 constituent calls, sent over 367,000 emails to lawmakers, and submitted over 10,000 letters to the editor in support of state and federal measures to protect and expand voting rights, ensure fair and impartial courts, and strengthen our democracy. At the federal level, stand up america worked to reform and restore impartiality back to the supreme court by advocating for a binding code of ethics, term limits, and expanding the court, driving over 225,000 calls and emails to lawmakers in support of supreme court reform legislation. We pushed the senate to confirm fair…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income rose $10k → $440k.

3 of 11 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 44% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of STAND UP AMERICA INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

STAND UP AMERICA INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 31% of grant income and the top three 61%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund STAND UP AMERICA INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 100% · 2020 84% · 2021 51% · 2022 76% · 2023 91% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

50% of STAND UP AMERICA INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 55% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.1M arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
