01What it does

What Community Building Art Works does

Mission

Arts-based community building efforts

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2024 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

The organization broke its programs out into community workshops, population specific workshops, and events

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. Community workshops consists of free, consistent, and enduring expressive art workshops that create a space for participants from population-specific programs to connect to a larger community once their program is completed. These workshops create a community of people who are able to reach across differences in demographics and life experience, to find connection and empathy. The public value of connection between veterans, military families, and the broader citizenship through these programs cannot be overstated.

    56% of program spending
  2. Population specific workshop programming consists of short-term and enduring workshop series of all genres designed exclusively for active duty military and veterans; or military families and caregivers. Participants in these programs are introduced to the arts as a tool for self-care and resilience. These programs are a safe entry point for veterans and military-connected people to begin expressing the inexpressible. Having their self-expression witnessed by others with common experiences is powerful, expansive, healing, and often life-changing.

    $122,484 spent
    31% of program spending
  3. Events are opportunities for selected participants, typically from the population-specific programs, to share their artwork and stories with the general public. These events are open to the public at a low-cost or are free, and always include an opportunity for artists and members of the public to connect and mingle. For the artist participants, the benefit is to be acknowledged and seen; and for members of the public, there is an opportunity to build empathy and connect with other stories, and through them perhaps connect more deeply with their own stories. The capstone in-person event, a day of belonging, is held each year in bethesda, maryland.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 7 funders, grant income rose $10k → $197k.

9 of 15 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 83% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of COMMUNITY BUILDING ART WORKS’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

COMMUNITY BUILDING ART WORKS leans on a few funders — its largest provides 49% of grant income and the top three 69%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

97% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund COMMUNITY BUILDING ART WORKS.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

50% of COMMUNITY BUILDING ART WORKS's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 53% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Where its funders are

83% of COMMUNITY BUILDING ART WORKS's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $168k that is directly attributable, 94% of it comes from funders outside Maryland, across 6 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $807k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
