01What it does

What Champions of Change Inc does

Mission

Champions of Change's primary exempt purpose is to provide support for homeless and foster families. This includes providing wraparound and supplemental services for these families to supply additional food, clothing, housing, and other resources that they may be lacking. Additionally, Champions of Change provides exceptional, once-in-a-lifetime experiences for these families that they would not participate in otherwise.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Hotels for the Holidays - Last December, we blessed over 250 of our homeless friends with an all-expenses-paid 3-day, 2-night staycation in a hotel so that their children did not have to wake up in shelters on Christmas. This was done in 4 cities: New York, NY, Nashville, TN, Charlotte, NC, and Rochester, NY. Champions of Change provided each guest with warm pajamas, all meals, gifts and stockings, trees, and decorations in every room.

    $67,618 spent
    53% of program spending
  2. Feed a Family for Thanksgiving - Champions of Change provided Thanksgiving baskets for nearly 200 families in Rochester, NY and the greater Charlotte, NC area with over 6,000 lbs. of food. Also included were $25 gift cards for each family to buy a turkey and additional fixings for their Thanksgiving dinners.

    $15,425 spent
    12% of program spending
  3. Princess Parties and Birthday Paint Parties for foster children - Hosted princess parties for foster girls and birthday paint parties for foster children throughout the year. Each party included painting canvases and paint materials, food, gifts, and prizes for the foster children and their accompanying foster parents. Each of the children received "Birthdays in a Bag" complete with cake, frosting, balloons, other decorations, and gifts so that they could celebrate on their actual birthday as well.

    $9,247 spent
    7% of program spending
  4. Champions of Change hosted low-income families for nights out on the town. Groups of foster families were treated to live theater in Uptown Charlotte at the Belk Theater to watch Hamilton, Annie, and participate in Monopoly Live.

    $9,600 spent
    8% of program spending
  5. Additional community services in support of homeless and foster individuals and families are provided ad hoc throughout the year as funding permits: providing one-time financial support to families to help pay rent and utilities and buy groceries, sending meals to families in need, sending care packages to foster youth struggling in college, and providing furniture to homeless families who have been newly placed in their apartments are some examples of the work that Champions of Change does to help fill financial gaps for low-income families.

Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $10k → $29k.

4 of 8 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 35% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 55% of grant income and the top three 82%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

90% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 100% · 2020 98% · 2021 44% · 2022 46% · 2023 44% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

60% of CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE INC's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 75% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $64k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
