What Bike Walk Kc does
Mission
Our mission is to redefine our streets as places for people to build a culture of active living. Our vision is a greater kansas city where everyone moves through the city and its public spaces equitably, safely, comfortably, and sustainably.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Bike share kc (formerly ridekc bike) is a 24/7 public bike share system providing a unique mix of technologies that extend the fixed-route transit system and gives residents and visitors a variety of options for getting around the greater kansas city area. It offers smart electric bikes, a few classic pedal bikes, and programming that promotes safe bicycling for transportation, recreation, fitness, and a more sustainable natural environment. In 2025, there were 400 bikes in service. More than 4,700 unique users took 27,604 trips; rode 64,000 total miles; offset 66,000 pounds of carbon; and burned 4.5 million calories.
$189,080 spent$130,379 earned by the program16% of program spendingPublic policy and community planning involves building relationships with elected officials and community leaders to implement policies that improve the built environment, especially in neighborhoods that have been historically underfunded and disinvested. Bike Walk Kc partners with local municipalities, school districts, and regional, state, and federal agencies, as well as other active transportation advocacy organizations across both missouri and kansas to improve walking and biking through public policy and school travel planning. Bike Walk Kc uses walk audits, technical assistance, built environment assessments, traffic counting/calming events, the home street home exhibition, and other activities to help neighborhoods identify problems related to the built environment, street safety, walkability/bikeability, and other infrastructure issues.
$347,942 spent$77,984 earned by the program29% of program spendingFamily education includes a comprehensive youth education program (safe routes to school) to empower kids to safely bike and walk to school and to advocate for their neighborhoods, primarily in johnson and wyandotte counties in ks, and jackson county in mo. More than 60,000 youth have participated since safe routes began in 2012. Components include bicycle safety education, youth ambassador training, maintaining your ride, public engagement and opportunities to "earn a bike." other programs are designed to teach adults safe riding skills, the rules of the road and how to do basic bike maintenance and repairs.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $1.2M to $1.8M (+50%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 43% · 2018 39% · 2019 41% · 2020 58% · 2021 30% · 2022 32% · 2023 39% · 2024 63% · 2025 71%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
87% of BIKE WALK KC’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (90% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 7 funders, grant income rose $38k → $62k.
3 of 36 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 5% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of BIKE WALK KC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 36 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
BIKE WALK KC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 44% of grant income and the top three 65%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
65% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund BIKE WALK KC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 67% · 2018 81% · 2019 93% · 2020 76% · 2021 67% · 2022 41% · 2023 32% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
25% of BIKE WALK KC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 31% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
70% of BIKE WALK KC's grant income comes from Missouri funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $75k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
