01What it does

What School Smart Kc Inc does

Mission

From our inception our mission has been to eliminate the achievement gap for students in kansas city. (continued on schedule o)we recognize the existing obstacles and challenges that affect school performance in our city - and we are fueled in our work by the passion of our families, the commitment of our school leaders and educators, the growth in quality and performance in many of our schools, and the overwhelming potential that we see in every child in our classrooms. We know that together we are stronger, and we work with the entire education community to make a difference for our students.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Schoolsmartkc formally launched in march of 2017 with the goal of closing the achievement gap for students in kansas city. When we launched, 30% of public schools within the boundaries of the kansas city public school district were performing in the bottom five percent of schools in the state of missouri. Despite this challenge, sskc saw the potential of our community to work together in support of our schools through coordinated strategies to boost school performance and increase student success.(continued on schedule o)since our work started, working closely with community partners and our schools, schoolsmartkc has invested over $30 million into schools and education partners in kansas city. These investments, which include direct support to 100% of school districts and leas in the city, have seen tangible improvements to schools in the form of new offerings, expanded programming, and improved technology in the hands of our students. They have also allowed for the development and expansion of deeper collective efforts to address issues surrounding family engagement, recruitment and retention of educators, and the critical need for pre-k solutions in our city.now, eight (8)…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 7 funders, grant income rose $2.1M → $8.0M.

4 of 17 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 44% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $200k from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Kc Action Fund). These are real filings, and they are not money SCHOOL SMART KC INC raised.

From the IRS filings of SCHOOL SMART KC INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SCHOOL SMART KC INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 44% of grant income and the top three 90%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

45% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SCHOOL SMART KC INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

25% of SCHOOL SMART KC INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 35% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $19M arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
