01What it does

What Asm Materials Education Foundation does

Mission

Created in 1952, the Asm Materials Education Foundation mission is to develop and deploy materials science content and hands-on, minds-on instructional strategies to inspire, engage, and empower future generations to create stem solutions for 21st century challenges. Programs and services are provided for k-12 students and teachers as well as undergraduate students.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Programs include undergraduate scholarships, undergraduate design competition, and other undergraduate programs, in addition to k-12 programs. The asm foundation's signature program is asm materials camps which have served almost 21,000 students and 15,000 teachers since inception. The program involves 40+ hours of hands-on lab instruction over five days, both in residential and commuter formats. All teachers participate at no cost to them and receive supplies to take back to their classrooms. The general public benefits from an informed public and the science and engineering fields benefit from an increased number of young adults choosing these career paths.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 10 funders, grant income rose $238k → $376k.

7 of 19 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 45% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ASM MATERIALS EDUCATION FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ASM MATERIALS EDUCATION FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 32% of grant income and the top three 73%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

78% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ASM MATERIALS EDUCATION FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

63% of ASM MATERIALS EDUCATION FOUNDATION's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 63% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.4M arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
