What Asian Health Coalition does

Mission

Improve the health and well-being of asian americans and pacific islanders (aapis) in illinois through advocacy, technical assistance, education, and community-based research.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Community health promotion: the health equity through access to language services (heals) program was developed to reduce language barriers that limit healthcare access for asian american and immigrant communities with limited english proficiency (lep). Through community education, multilingual outreach campaigns, provider training, clinic system improvements, and interpreter workforce development, heals increased awareness of language rights and strengthened access to culturally responsive care. Since 2022, the program has directly reached 14,367 community members, engaged 677 participants in education sessions, reached an additional 2 million people through multilingual media campaigns, and supported 42,543 patients in receiving language access services creating lasting improvements in equitable communication and healthcare access.

  2. Mental health and substance abuse: training responders and individuals to navigate using mental health first aid (train-mhfa) train-mhfa improves mental health literacy and confidence in responding to mental health challenges through evidence-based trainings and community partnerships across chicago. The program provides adult and youth mental health first aid (mhfa), qpr suicide prevention training, mental health resource guides, and connections to behavioral health services through the illinois care continuum (icc) referral portal. This year, 107 community members, professionals, and frontline staff were trained as mhfa responders or qpr gatekeepers, with 76% reporting increased mental health knowledge. The program also facilitated 1,729 referrals to behavioral health and related services, helping improve access to care in underserved communities.

  3. Covid-19:v-protect is a community-driven initiative designed to increase confidence in and uptake of covid-19 and influenza vaccines among chinese, rohingya, south asian, and filipino communities in the chicagoland area. The program was developed to address vaccine hesitancy, misinformation, and barriers to accessing reliable health information within immigrant communities. Through culturally and linguistically tailored outreach and education, we identified and trained 16 trusted community messengers to share accurate vaccine information and engage residents in meaningful conversations. We also hosted a webinar focused on combating health misinformation in immigrant communities. As a result of these efforts, the program reached 8,481 individuals and vaccinated or referred 681 community members for covid-19 and influenza vaccination in fy25.

  4. Viral hepatitis the dont let hep b win campaign is a community-driven initiative led by the Asian Health Coalition to increase hepatitis b awareness, education, screening, and linkage to care among asian and african immigrant communities and other populations disproportionately affected by hepatitis b. Working with community-based organizations, health clinics, local health departments, and hepatitis b specialists, the program delivered culturally and linguistically tailored outreach in more than 18 languages to address health disparities and improve access to prevention and care. In fy25, the campaign reached 208,827 illinois residents across more than 80 zip codes, developed 13 new culturally tailored educational resources, generated over 30,000 social media interactions, and connected 214 individuals to care, with 100% receiving in-language counseling and linkage to appropriate treatment and prevention services.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 5 funders, grant income rose $60k → $93k.

3 of 12 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 43% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ASIAN HEALTH COALITION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ASIAN HEALTH COALITION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 35% of grant income and the top three 65%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

78% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ASIAN HEALTH COALITION.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $488k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
