What Alchemy Inc does

Mission

To assist urban adolescents to develop a sense of purpose in life and to thrive as members of a family, school and community.

As stated on its FY2026 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Aps in school male program is an alchemy mentoring group which meets during the school day throughout each academic year, for 22-25 weeks, in akron public school (aps) school buildings. Through the telling, discussion, and interpretation of assigned ancient mythological tales told to the beat of a djembe drum and with students seated in a safe circle to cultivate a sense of community. Trained facilitators teach participants to navigate life's challenges through exploration into ethics, humankind, critical decision making, and much more. Writing skills are also developed through required journaling during each session. The highly experienced guidance from classroom facilitators helps them envision and develop clear goals, for both their academic and life journeys.

  3. Gja alchemy provided monthly in-school sessions from october 2025 to may 2026 for 8th grade male youth at george jackson academy in the east village which is located at 104 st. Marks place. The groups were conducted using the alchemy method which is centered around the telling, discussion, and interpretation of mythological stories told to the beat of an african drum. Through discussion and journaling students begin and continue to explore their personal challenges as they envision and adopt the character traits of the stories' heroes (e.g., patience, humility, self-sacrifice, etc.). A key focus was on social-emotional-learning (sel) growth with a focus on long-term benefits that promote generational changes.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 3 funders, grant income fell $52k → $13k.

6 of 18 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 55% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ALCHEMY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ALCHEMY INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 27% of grant income and the top three 64%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

61% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ALCHEMY INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

57% of ALCHEMY INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 50% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

55% of ALCHEMY INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $410k that is directly attributable, 68% of it comes from funders outside Ohio, across 4 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $508k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
