What African American Cultural Center does

Mission

The mission of the august wilson African American Cultural Center is to own and operate a home for the arts, storytelling, learning and exchange around the african american experience and the rich culture of the african diaspora. The awaacc is a not-for-profit arts and culture organization that offers a variety of visual and performing arts programs, community engagement and education initiatives to diverse audiences, including school aged students, families, and senior citizens. Many visual art experiences have educational curriculum built within it, providing a deeper dive into the art work and the artist. The awaacc also provides a youth writers camp, family community day events, and special visual art tours.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. The African American Cultural Center (aacc) was formed by three foundations in pittsburgh, pennsylvania to acquire a building known as the august wilson center (center) out of receivership. The aacc exists to own, operate and preserve the center as a vibrant community asset focused primarily on producing and presenting african american arts and cultural programming to the general public. The center includes seven exhibition galleries, a 486 seat theater, an education center, a 4,000 square foot gallery for art exhibits, and multiple-use spaces for community events.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 10 funders, grant income rose $54k → $3.8M.

6 of 27 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 7% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER leans on a few funders — its largest provides 38% of grant income and the top three 84%; half comes from just 2 funders.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.0M arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
